From the Sweet 16 to the Elite Eight and now the Final Four – the NCAA March Madness Basketball Championships have been mesmerizing fans coast to coast. But this week, perhaps the greatest level of enthusiasm and raw energy is at the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). An eleventh seed going into the tournament, they have arrived at the Final Four and have a good shot at going all the way.
The Barnes & Noble at VCU bookstore has been with the team every step of the way, providing fans not just with team spirit apparel but, thanks to a well oiled just-in-time process and outstanding vendor relationships, we have made it possible for fans to order school spirit gear celebrating specific victories, literally seconds after each win.
When the team progressed from the Sweet 16 to the Elite Eight, fans could immediately order merchandise celebrating this milestone from the bookstore’s website. Online orders flooded in by the thousands and the store stayed open late in order to accommodate the crush of students and local fans looking for merchandise. The Barnes & Noble at VCU Facebook page also features team apparel and has become a hub for fans looking to share their enthusiasm for the team.
“It has been so exciting watching the team advance,” says Store Manager Amy Randolf. “The energy in the store is tremendous and our booksellers are working double time to make sure everyone gets their merchandise asap!”
This weekend the VCU Rams pushed passed Kansas and advanced to the Final Four. As soon the as the buzzer sounded, we launched a rapid response with updated merchandise on the website and more than 35,000 special VCU Final Four shirts expected in store in less than 48 hours. If the Rams make it to the final game, you can be sure the bookstore will be there with the fans, to help cheer them on.
