Rowan Grand Opening Draws Hundreds with Good Food and “Weird” Authors

January 27, 2011

Rowan University TeamThe savory aroma of bacon cheeseburgers, barbecue-tinged chili, and spicy cinnamon-laced chocolate brownies filled the air of the new Barnes & Noble Collegiate Superstore at Rowan University during its official grand opening on January 19 in Glassboro, N.J. The tantalizing aromas were courtesy of Bravo TV’s Top Chef reality-star Spike Mendelsohn who demonstrated recipes and signed copies of his new book, The Good Stuff Cookbook: Burgers, Fries, Shakes, Wedges, and More.

Mendelsohn’s motto, “Good times and good friends,” deliciously reflected the atmosphere of the bookstore. Hundreds of residents and dignitaries from the surrounding community celebrated the opening of the expansive two-story 37,000 square foot superstore. “This is such a great day here in Glassboro,” said Mayor, Leo McCabe, who officially opened the ceremonies that morning. “And we’re so pleased to have this magnificent store as the anchor for Rowan Boulevard.”

The bookstore will anchor the Rowan Boulevard Project, a $300 million redevelopment project linking the University with downtown Glassboro. It is one of 40 collegiate superstores Barnes & Noble operates nationwide.

The celebration kicked off in the morning with a Dr. Seuss story-time in the children’s section. Following Spike’s lunchtime cooking demonstration local historians gave a presentation on the history of Glassboro. Later in the evening, publishers of Weird N.J., Mark Sceurman and Mark Moran, shared some of New Jersey’s local legends and signed copies of their books.

In addition to selling textbooks and school supplies, Barnes & Noble at Rowan University offers a wide selection of  trade books, magazines and newspapers, school spirit clothing , and a vast array of convenience foods. The store also features a full-service cafe serving Starbucks products and there is ample seating throughout.

Though many campus quads are still snowbound, our bookstores are ready for spring with a fresh, new crop of fashionable styles including a rich array of graphic tees, shorts, sweats, and yoga pants – in the latest colors and designs.

Nike Tempo shorts will be on every student’s ‘must-have’ list. Celebrities and college girls alike sported this trendy short last year and its popularity shows no sign of slowing down. As fashion accessory or athletic necessity, these running shorts are still on fire. In addition to basic neutrals and school colors, this spring students will find bold new colors to choose from including the dazzling shades of marina blue and persimmon.

Students will also love our great selection of comfy sportswear. New tank tops, short sleeves, long sleeves, v-necks, and crew necks are available in school colors as well as the traditional heathered grey and charcoal. This soft and stretchy fabric has won-over college students with its irresistible “feel appeal.”

Offering a more fashionable and flattering alternative to traditional pajamas, the yoga pant remains a strong seller. To capitalize on its enduring popularity, we have expanded our selection to include long and crop fold-over leggings from multiple vendors featuring several fold-over treatments.

Whether on spring break or just hanging around the dorm, students will be dressed for the season in our fashion collection of flip flops, sun dresses, and trendy accessories. If students are not quite ready for the warmer weather just yet, we have Capelli rain boots and fleece liners (in select stores), as well as cold-weather leggings.

Our stores are fully stocked with the latest styles for spring – perfect for helping students shake off those winter blues.
