New Mexico State University Bookstore Soars

September 12, 2011

The newly constructed Barnes & Noble at New Mexico State University (NMSU) Bookstore is off and flying. Workers put the finishing touches on the new LEED-certified facility, located at the corner of Jordan Street and University Avenue, and opened for business on August 1. A grand opening celebration is scheduled for September 16, after students return to campus.

Tiger Moth Pistol Pete Airplane

The interior space features a 4/5th scale model of a de Havilland DH 82 Tiger Moth Pistol Pete airplane suspended from the ceiling and is one of the many unique touches displayed throughout the store. The interior also showcases photographs and fixtures that highlight the rich history of NMSU, Las Cruces, New Mexico, and the southwest.

Additional features of the new store include an expanded children’s section, a larger selection of Aggie merchandise and trade books, two “living room” areas featuring gas fireplaces for relaxing and casual reading, and an outdoor dining area featuring a third fireplace. The “living room” areas will also be available to campus and community organizations to host presentations or meetings.

First Ever Technology Center

The bookstore occupies almost 31,000 square feet of space and includes a café serving assorted soups, sandwiches and pastries, as well as Starbuck’s coffee. It will also include a newly designed technology center. The technology center will offer students and faculty laptops and computer accessories, and will feature Apple® products. The center will also include Wi-Fi and will allow customers to access free in-store downloads for the award-wining NOOK eBook reader, which will also be sold in the store.

Indigenous trees and plants are currently being planted around the perimeter of this newly LEED-certified building, supporting the university’s strong commitment to sustainability.
