The greatest season in Stony Brook University baseball history finally came to an end as the Seawolves lost to the No. 3 national seed Florida State in a College World Series elimination game at TD Ameritrade Park.
Stony Brook, which only began playing Division I baseball in 2000, capped off an incredible season with a 52-15 record by also winning the America East Championship, NCAA Coral Gables Regional championship and NCAA Baton Rouge Super Regional title. The 52 wins are not only a program record, but the Seawolves are the first America East team ever and first Northeast Region team since 1986 to reach the College World Series.
Phones were ringing off the hook at the Stony Brook University Bookstore for commemorative merchandise after the baseball team upset perennial NCAA powerhouse and six-time national champion Louisiana State University (LSU) to qualify for the College World Series.
“There has been so much excitement on our campus,” said Stony Brook Bookstore Manager Boon Teo. “We were bombarded with requests for baseball related items on Monday after the team defeated LSU and made it into the World Series. We quickly stocked our store with t-shirts and baseball hats and sold out in almost four hours.”
The honors continued as the New York Mets invited the Stony Brook baseball team to throw the first pitch at Tuesday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles at Citi Field. Prior to the game, the team enjoyed watching Mets players in batting practice before being recognized prior to the first pitch. The bleachers were filled with hundreds of proud fans who donned their red Stony Brook tees and baseball hats in honor of the eastern Long Island hometown team.
“Once the team made it into the World Series, we were filling online orders from all over the country,” said Teo. “The interest in Stony Brook has been incredible and the demand for World Series and Stony Brook t-shirts and hats has skyrocketed 81% since the team beat LSU. We’re still placing orders. We couldn’t be prouder of this team.”
The Seawolves, under 2012 NCBWA National Head Coach of the Year Matt Senk, are coming off the most successful season in program history. The team stunned college baseball by defeating Miami, Missouri State and Central Florida in the NCAA Regional and LSU in the NCAA Super Regional to reach its first-ever College World Series.
