Steve Falke, Director of Stores for Barnes & Noble College, and the Penn State Bookstore were recently awarded the Third Annual Penn State Lady Lion Basketball Pink Zone Champion Award for their generosity in supporting the WBCA Pink Zone at Penn State. The award recognizes individuals or groups for their significant contributions in the area of breast cancer awareness, prevention, education, treatment research or care.
With the proceeds from t-shirts sales contributing to the fund-raiser, Falke asked students enrolled in the Design Program at the University to create design concepts for the Pink Zone t-shirts, with one design chosen by the board as the official t-shirt each year.
“We really wanted to raise the quality of the designs and this has been a great project for the Design Program students,” said Falke. “The hard part is choosing just one design because they are all so good.”
The Pink Zone t-shirts were available at all Penn State Bookstore locations, but the bookstore also pushed t-shirt sales beyond the University to include area hospitals and outside groups. With almost 14,000 participants in attendance at this year’s game and fundraiser, the charity has grown significantly through the years.
The Penn State women’s basketball team presented the Lady Lion Basketball Pink Zone Champion Award during half-time of their match-up against the University of Minnesota at the Bryce Jordan Center, where the Lady Lions easily defeated the Minnesota Golden Gophers 74-51.
Last year, the Lady Lions donated nearly $200,000 for breast cancer causes. This year’s fundraising effort is expected to reach $250,000 and will benefit the Mount Nittany Medical Center, Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital and Lewistown Hospital.
