Snead State Bookstore Transitions to Barnes & Noble College

August 08, 2011

Snead State Community College (SSCC) has entered into an agreement with Barnes & Noble College to manage the school’s campus bookstore.  Located in the Boaz Outlet Center in Boaz, Alabama, SSCC transferred management of the bookstore effective June 22, 2011.

“We’re excited about this partnership with Barnes & Noble College,” said Larry Miller, chief academic officer at Snead State. “The bookstore industry is continuously changing, and Snead State does not have the necessary resources to keep up with the current trends and provide the services for our students that they will receive through Barnes & Noble College.”

 Student-Focused Innovation

Barnes & Noble will introduce a number of new and innovative services, many of which are focused on delivering cost savings and convenience to students. With the rising cost of higher education, our bookstores take the lead in offering the widest range of cost-saving textbook options and formats with new, used, rental, digital, and custom textbooks both online and in the store. And we accept a variety of payment options including PayPal and financial aid.

Under the terms of the contract, SSCC students will now have access to:

  • In-store and online textbook rentals. For the first time, students have the option of renting their textbooks, instead of purchasing them. This option is available to students both in the store and from the bookstore’s website. Students who opt for textbook rentals will save more than 50% over the cost of a new printed book.
  • Rapidly expanding selection of eTextbooks. In addition to offering savings of up to 60 % over a new printed book, Barnes & Noble’s revolutionary and free NOOK Study™ application serves up eTextbooks in a rich and engaging format that enhances the learning experience.
  • Generous Cash for Books program. Books that faculty are reusing next term are eligible for a 50% cash payout, dependent upon needed inventories.

Advanced Bookstore Technology

Barnes & Noble will bring leading technology to SSCC with faster in-store POS and integrated textbook management systems. Plus, students can stay connected using the bookstore’s own Facebook page that allows students to shop for books, clothing, and school merchandise.

“In talking with Barnes & Noble College, we learned that the benefits for our students would be numerous,” said Snead State President Robert Exley. “In addition to the in-store and online services, Barnes & Noble College will also offer opportunities for student employment. I believe our students will share our excitement once they see firsthand the quality of resources that will become available to them through this partnership.”

Barnes & Noble has also committed to future store upgrades and renovations as well as awarding yearly textbook scholarships totaling $2,000 for eligible Snead State students. Twenty NOOK Color™ eReaders will also be awarded this year to the Presidential Scholarship Program.

Barnes & Noble operates more than 630 campus bookstores across the United States at schools such institutions as Harvard, Yale, the University of Pennsylvania, Indiana University, and Georgia Tech, as well as fifteen in the state of Tennessee.
