In just their fourth season as a program, the Sandhills Community College “Flyers” won the 2012 NJCAA Division III Men’s Basketball National Championship on March 17.
After winning their first round game at the buzzer and their semifinal contest in overtime – both by just one point – Sandhills Community College (SCC) from North Carolina defeated Cedar Valley Community College from Texas, 101-86 for the championship on the campus of Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake, N.Y. It was the first time a North Carolina team has ever won the national title.
Head coach Mike Apple praised his players, the coaching staff and team supporters for their efforts.
“I am very happy and very proud,” Apple said. “As a Moore County native, seeing all these people I have known for years who are out here celebrating our victory is extremely moving. This is a real community thing, and a great event.”
SCC terminated intercollegiate athletics in the early 1980s before resuming the program almost 30 years later in 2008. The SCC Flyers finished the season with a 30-6 record, ending on an 11-game winning streak.
The Sandhills Community College Bookstore shared in the victory by quickly producing a national championship “Flyer” t-shirt.
“Our school is so excited about the championship,” said Sandra Dales, manager of the Barnes & Noble SCC Bookstore. “To celebrate the win, we worked with our vendor to create a souvenir championship t-shirt that we can’t sell enough of. There has been tremendous interest from students, faculty and the surrounding community. Everyone is so proud of the team and wants to show their school pride.”
