Penn State Symposium Focuses on New Approaches for Teaching & Learning

Penn State SymposiumThe 18th annual Penn State Symposium for Teaching and Learning with Technology brought more than 450 students, faculty, and employees from Penn State campus together to discuss new approaches to teaching and learning. The event, which took place on March 26, included representatives from Barnes & Noble.

The sold-out symposium consisted of sessions ranging from a panel discussion on technology trends and challenges shaping education at Penn State University, to a session on faculty and student experiences using NOOK Study™ in PSU classrooms.

Perspectives from Publishers: Future Trends and Challenges

John Harwood, Associate Vice Provost for Information Technology, University Park, moderated a panel discussion, which included Jade Roth, Vice President, Books and Digital Strategy for Barnes & Noble as well as senior representatives from Pearson, Cengage and McGraw-Hill. The panel discussed innovative trends and technologies impacting higher education including, eTextbooks, e-readers and mobile devices, course management systems, online supplemental materials, student response systems, and more.

NOOK Study: eTextbooks in the Penn State Classroom

Steve Falke, Director Stores and David McCarthy, Director Digital Education, both from Barnes & Noble, presented a session on NOOK Study: eTextbooks in the Penn State Classroom.

“We worked with faculty and students who were using NOOK Study in their classrooms,” said Falke. “Working directly with the users helps us better understand what is effective in a learning environment and what else we can develop to add to the educational experience. Students liked the process, and faculty found that students were more engaged using NOOK Study.”

The session focused on learning and educational trends in the evolving world of eLearning materials. Falke presented the perspective of faculty and students as they used digital materials and the role of the bookstore in that transition. McCarthy presented results from eTextbook research conducted last fall in several Penn State classrooms. Some of the study’s findings included:

  • 91% reported NOOK Study had a neutral or beneficial impact on class performance
  • 84% reported NOOK Study had a neutral or beneficial impact on their efficiency in studying and preparing for class.

Established in 1993, the Symposium for Teaching and Learning with Technology is both an annual one-day event and a year-round online forum for faculty who are using technology to enhance teaching, learning, and research.
