As the 39th President of the United States and the only president to win the Nobel Peace Prize after leaving office (Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and Barack Obama all won while in office), Jimmy Carter has a lot to write about.
On January 18, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., the former president will be at the Barnes & Noble at Emory bookstore to sign copies of his latest book, Through the Year with Jimmy Carter: 366 Daily Meditations from the 39th President. A prolific writer, this is Carter’s 23rd book since leaving office and 25th in total. It is a “frank, honest, sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking, and always relevant” book that “challenges readers to be more Christ-like every day of their lives,” according the his publisher. The event will be open to the general public.
“We’re thrilled to have President Carter here for the book signing,” said bookstore manager Myra Haley. “He has been such a big part of our university for so many years that we know this will be a very exciting event.”
Carter’s connection to Emory University runs deep. After he left the White House in 1981, he began working with the University to establish the Carter Center, a nongovernmental, nonprofit organization that advances human rights and alleviates human suffering in seventy-five countries worldwide. In its 30 years, the Carter Center has been involved in efforts all around the globe to prevent and resolve conflict, enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health. He has also served as a University Distinguished Professor at Emory since 1982.
The excitement and energy that Barnes & Noble brings to college and university campuses begins with our in-store initiatives. Last year, we hosted thousands of events across the country. Celebrity author signings, book readings, sampling programs, concerts, cooking demonstrations, and charitable events were just some of the programs that help make the bookstore an integral part of campus life.
