Furman University had cause to celebrate when it recently held a grand opening celebration for its new bookstore, now managed by Barnes & Noble College. Furman President Rod Smolla offered remarks at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by Barnes & Noble regional manager Joel Kriner.
“We’re especially proud to be a part of this wonderful university,” said Kriner. “Barnes & Noble College looks forward to bringing Furman ‘what’s next’ in the delivery of next-generation educational content and an unmatched retail experience.”
Located in the University Center, the two-story glass “bump out” in the spacious café opens up to a spectacular view of beautiful Furman Lake. The natural light filtering through the expansive glass wall gives a brighter and airy feeling to the store, according to bookstore manager Jessica Ellis.
The new space has been customized with images of Furman students, buildings and landmarks throughout. Large images also appear on the new media wall where photos flank a widescreen television.
The media wall introduces what is becoming a popular gathering spot for students. With more than 1,400 square feet incorporated from the former Tower Café, the new lounge is now an inviting living room space filled with comfortable “Furman purple” lounge chairs, a granite-surround gas fireplace, and tables and chairs for students to gather, study, or just take a break.
The Barnes & Noble Café serves Starbucks products and a variety of tempting pastries, soups, heat-and-eat meals, and an assortment of snacks. Outside the bookstore, a tranquil water wall features an etched Furman diamond “F,” as well as a new entryway canopy.
The bookstore also offers a wide variety of trendy dorm items such as throw pillows, linens, rugs, lamps and fans. A large assortment of computer, iPhone and MP3 accessories is now available along with an extensive selection of Furman apparel and gear that is always popular with students and alumni.
Barnes & Noble will introduce a number of new and innovative services, many of which are focused on delivering cost savings and convenience to students. With the rising cost of higher education, our bookstores take the lead in offering the widest range of affordable textbook options and formats with rental, digital, new, used and custom textbooks both online and in the store. And we make it easy for students to purchase their textbooks by accepting cash, check, credit, or financial aid.
